Eaglets Upset Rival Brother Rice toWin District 29 Title

On Friday, the Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Eaglets (11-10, CHSL-Central) defeated the Bloomfield

Hills Brother Rice Warriors (22-2, CHSL-Central) by a score of 57-50 in the District 29 Title

Game.

The Warriors, who came in as the #1 team in the state, got off to a hot start. Brother Rice

outscored the Eaglets 15-9 in the first quarter.

Orchard Lake fought back in the second quarter. They went from trailing by 9 points to leading

by 6 points in the quarter. The Warriors would finish the quarter on a 6-0 run and the game went

into the half tied at 26. The Eaglets outscored Rice 17-11 in the quarter.

The two teams played a close game during the third quarter. Orchard Lake had the slight edge,

outscoring Brother Rice 16-15, taking a 42-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

Orchard Lake and Brother Rice continued to play a close game in the fourth quarter. With 3:11

left in the game, Trey McKenney scored after a steal by Sharod Barnes. This gave the Eaglets the

lead. They would end up holding on and winning 57-50.

The GBrand G of the Game was given to Trey McKenney. He had a double-double with 26

points and 11 rebounds. When asked about the victory after the game, McKenney said “It was

just fun to do this with my guys”. Curtis Williams led Brother Rice in scoring with 13 points.

This was a statement victory for Orchard Lake. They came in as the underdogs, facing the #1

team in the state. They came out, fought hard, and pulled off the upset, winning the District 29

Title.
