Cubs Triumph Over Crusaders

On Friday, the University of Detroit Jesuit Cubs (18-4, CHSL-Central) defeated the Detroit King

Crusaders (12-9, DPSL) 74-59 in the first game of Operation Friendship

The opening quarter saw the Cubs and the Crusaders trading baskets. Both teams had the lead

throughout the quarter, although UofD led for majority of the quarter. King tied the game with a

minute left, making it 13-13 going into the second quarter.

The Cubs began to pull ahead in the second quarter. The took advantage of mistakes made by the

Crusaders, as King turned the ball over multiple times. UofD outscored Detroit King 18-11 in the

second quarter, taking a 31-24 lead going into halftime.

The Crusaders came out firing in the third quarter. They started the quarter going on an 12-6 run,

cutting the lead to one and making it a 37-36 game with just under 3:30 left in the third. Later in

the quarter, Chaz Lewless hit a three-pointer, tying the game at 39 with 1:59 remaining. The

Cubs would jump back on top and take a 46-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

UofD exploded in the fourth. They outscored the Crusaders 28-16 and blew the game open.

Detroit King was unable to mount another comeback and the Cubs went on to win by a score of

74-59.

Sonny Wilson was given the GBrand G of the Game, tallying 25 points and 6 rebounds. Wilson

talked about how this victory gave his team momentum going into the playoffs. He said “Coming

in off that loss to Brother Rice, I just told the guys we gotta come in, give our best energy, you

know. Get ready for the playoffs.”

Chaz Lewless and Jonathan Coffey were the scoring leaders for King. Lewless had 25 points and

7 rebounds, while Coffey had 16 points and 8 rebounds.
