#1 St. Mary’s Prep. downs #2 Liggett in both games, moves to 11 wins on the season

On a day where you would have thought a tornado was touching down in southeast Michigan, the number one team in the country, the Eaglets, swept the #2 team in the state, the Knights, in their Tuesday afternoon doubleheader.

The highly touted Clemson commit Brock Porter took the mound for St. Mary’s in the first game after no-hitting Brother Rice his last time out, and the right hander had another solid day against one of the best lineups he will face this season. He went six innings deep and struck out 12 Knights, but gave up his first earned runs of the season.

For the Knights, Michigan commit Kurt Barr had a solid outing as well against one of the best lineups in the country. He made it past the fourth inning with five strikeouts but ultimately could not contain the Eaglets bats.

The player of the game offensively for the O.L.S.M. was junior Tennessee commit Blake Grimmer. Grimmer had an RBI double and a solo homerun to help secure the lead for St. Mary’s and they would not be denied after that.

Offense was hard to come by for the Knights in the first matchup, rightfully so with Porter on the mound, but junior Michigan commit Jarren Purify was a bright spot for them. He got on base twice, with his only hit, and his team's only hit, coming by way of an RBI single.

Michigan commit Jasen Oliver came in to shut the door and the Eaglets went onto win the first showdown seven to two. They sent sophomore Parker Brzustewicz to start on the bump for the second tilt.

Brzustewicz had a very promising outing. He recorded nine strikeouts but was pulled in the fifth inning for senior Davenport commit Brandon Skorupski. He and Oliver ultimately held off the Knights late run to seal the game in six innings.

For the Knights, the offense came easier in this game as they were able to put five runs on the board. Purify and Ryan Jones combined for three of the runs, with Purify opening the game up with a solo shot and Jones adding two RBI doubles.

Their offense was again outmatched by St. Mary’s though as Michigan State commit Jake Dresselhouse, Grimmer, and Oliver all went yard.

Fellow Michigan State commit Jack Jones, who started for the Knights in game two, had a rough outing, giving up five earned runs and walking six Eaglets.

With the losses, Liggett moves to .500 on the season at three and three and St. Mary’s continues their perfect season, moving to 11 and zero.

O.L.S.M. will take a trip to the Mistake by the Lake later this week but will be back next Monday to take on Detroit Country Day on the road. We will have coverage of that 5 P.M. ET matchup. Stay tuned for updates.
