Eaglets Beat Cubs in Overtime Thriller

On Saturday, the Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Eaglets (4-2, CHSL-C) defeated the University of Detroit-Jesuit Cubs (7-1, CHSL-C) by a score of 67-64. 

The first quarter was very close in terms of offense. The Eaglets and Cubs traded baskets as the score remained close. Orchard Lake, despite trailing most of the first quarter, pulled ahead and took an 18-13 lead into the second. 

Orchard Lake had a slight edge in the second quarter. Despite the Cubs coming to within a point, the Eaglets did not surrender the lead. They always had an answer and took a 34-27 lead into halftime. 

Jesuit came out strong in the third quarter. They outscored the Eaglets 14-10 in the quarter and shifted the momentum in their favor. However, they were unable to reclaim the lead as they still trailed 44-41 going into the final quarter. 

Not long into the fourth quarter, the Cubs took a one-point lead. This was short lived as the Eaglets snatched the lead back seconds later. OLSM added to their total and had a 52-47 lead with a little over four minutes left in the game. 

At this point, the game was halted. All night, there had been issues with the floor. Players were constantly slipping and, despite efforts to try these areas, the problems continued. A decision was made to suspend the game and resume it the following day. 

The game resumed on Saturday morning. OLSM had a 52-47 lead and there was just over four minutes remaining. The Cubs come out and outscored OLSM 10-5. They tied the game at 57 with a minute remaining and were able to force overtime. 

Orchard Lake scored the first two baskets of OT and took a 61-57 lead with a minute and a half remaining. A clutch three-pointer pulled Jesuit to within one shortly after. The Cubs went on to tie the game on a free throw with 30 seconds remaining. 

The final 30 seconds had both teams trading free throws. With 7 seconds remaining, Orchard Lake held a 65-64 lead. After a quick foul, OLSM went to the line to shoot two. They made them both and ended up defeating the Cubs 67-64. 

Trey McKenney and Sharod Barnes had big games for the Eaglets. McKenney was 17 of 24 from the floor and 3 of 5 from the free throw line. He scored 37 points and had 10 rebounds. Barnes was 5 of 9 from the field and 8 of 10 from the free throw line. He had 18 points with 3 assists and 6 rebounds. 

OLSM will take on Warren De La Salle (6-2, CHSL-C) on 1-10 as they look to continue their success. U of D Jesuit will play Catholic Central (4-3, CHSL-C) on 1-10 as they look to bounce back from their first loss of the season.
