#1 St. Mary’s Prep. escapes a valiant effort from #6 Brother Rice, takes 3rd straight Bishop Title

As expected, Michigan commit Alfredo Velazquez and Kent State commit Ciaran Caughey showed out on the mound, but in the end the Eaglet offense put together a one-run run in the 6th inning to put the game out of reach.
The All-League right hander Caughey was not perfect, but his 13 strikeouts through six innings and three seven inning strikeouts by Michigan commit Jasen Oliver were enough to hold off the Warriors offense in the title game.
For the Warriors, the All-Catholic left hander Velazquez did his absolute best against the loaded Eaglet lineup, but it was not enough in the end. The junior went all six innings, recording nine strikeouts in total, but Michigan commit Jack Crighton played spoiler and hero for O.L.S.M.
As the game was knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the All-Catholic senior Crighton stepped into the batter’s box with two outs and a runner in scoring position. Crighton had been out for quite some time with an injury, but he did what the team leader in batting average does so often, get a hit. His infield RBI single was all the Eaglets needed in the end to earn the title.
It is safe to say that the rematch of last year’s Bishop title was no slouch, as Bob Riker and Brother Rice gave all they had against arguably the best coach and team in the country, Matt Petry and the Eaglets. St. Mary’s will look to keep their perfect season bid alive as their next outing will be against Bay City Western on Friday in Flint. Stay tuned for our coverage of that matchup.
